Meet the Rockstar Processor Behind ZTE’s Axon 40 Ultra:  The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

It hasn't been long since ZTE released the Axon 40 Ultra making waves as one of the most innovative smartphones on the market right now, but the star of this article isn’t just the device itself. It’s the genius processor that powers it; the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

It’s Axon’s most powerful SoC yet, with a performance unlike anything witnessed before on the wide range of Axon smartphones. The chip has upgraded several features on the phone, including the graphics performance, the speed, its photographic capabilities, and (most importantly), the network.

Game-changing Graphics and Display

The remarkable graphics performance makes the Axon 40 Ultra a perfect device for gamers. And if it’s good for gamers, it’ll be way above average for the less-picky. The on-device display delivers an astounding 4K @ 60 Hz as well as a Quad High Definition + @ 144 Hz, and a full HD resolution of 1116x2480. The beautiful color depth of up to 10 bits makes for a true and immersive visual experience. To take it a step further is the Unreal Engine 5 support notably one of the best engines for gaming, known for its immersive 3D architectural visualization. If you aren’t familiar with it, this engine is used by some of the top-ranking game developers because of the high-grade animation and lighting it has. From PC games to PlayStation, and right into your palm with the Axon 40 Ultra.  Android Police reviewed the display, comparing it to the Samsung SS22 Ultra, “Truly loved the AMOLED display experience on the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra. For one, the size is great for watching any kind of content, again matching the Samsung S22 Ultra at 6.8 inches.” While the Axon 40 Ultra does house a lower resolution than the SS22 Ultra, it is barely noticeable.

World-Renowned 5G, Better Network and Connectivity, and Pitch-Perfect Audio

Enjoy the quick download speeds and easy connectivity we all deserve. The 4th Generation Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System delivers up to 10Gbps in speed. It is also a 5G uplink carrier, making it the world’s first processor to boast a 10 Gigabit 5G solution. The upgraded 5G solution allows for more network connections, more frequencies, and improved bandwidths globally.

Alongside these is the Qualcomm® FastConnect™ 6900 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth system which enables Wi-Fi 6 and 6E which reach impeccable speeds of up to 3.6Gbps for smooth web-surfing.

The Snapdragon powers the devices Stereo Dual Speakers, including high-end sound technology that incorporates Lossless wireless music streaming and never-before-seen LE Audio implementations. All of which make for an elevated audio experience whether you are listening to your favorite podcast, bumping your weekend playlist, or live streaming broadcasts.

Accelerated Speed

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Processor has the fastest central processing unit ever on an Axon smartphone, with a measured CPU Clock Speed of up to 3.0 GHz achieved on its Qualcomm® Kryo™ CPU, and its 64-bit CPU architecture which makes for uninterrupted navigation. The Snapdragon 8 speed tops its predecessor, the Snapdragon 888, with a CPU speed that is 20% faster, with some tests displaying up to a 30% reduction in power usage. Did someone order more juice without the battery drain?

Triple Camera Excellency

Of course, we cannot help but remark on the out-of-this-world photographic capabilities. The Axon 40 Ultra boasts a triple camera perfectly powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to produce the most breathtaking images. The Qualcomm Spectra™ image signal processor has triple 18-bit ISPs and a hardware accelerator for computer vision (CV-ISP). The Ultra-high pixel density makes for shots that capture every detail with absolute clarity, and the AI and machine learning algorithms increase the image quality by 70%. The multi-frame noise reduction increases the exposure to reduce picture noise, and the camera also has auto-focus and auto-exposure to make capturing the best settings easier. If you’re someone who is particular about great quality images, this is the device for you.

Quick-Charge Technology

The efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is further displayed in its Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 5 technology which makes for the delivery of longer battery life to fuel your Axon 40 Ultra throughout the day. The device has a 65W fast charge and a 5000mAh extended battery life that will not need to be charged every hour (say goodbye to a life of struggle). This allows several hours of video viewing, call time, and standby; all hassle-free. In an article titled “What battery size should your next phone have?” published by digit, it was written “A smartphone powered by a 5000mAh battery is essential if you are glued to your screen watching movies, playing games or shooting videos. With a 5000mAh battery, the smartphone will almost never run out in a day, no matter how you use it. It’s especially useful for creators and bloggers who would need to use the camera more often than not shooting videos in high resolution. Even an avid gamer glued to games like PUBG Mobile will need a large 5000mAh battery so that the charge doesn’t run out in the middle of the game. But here again, you would need fast charging, something that is faster than the typical 18W fast charging most phones offer.”

Even with the absence of wireless charging, Android Authority remarked on the battery life saying it “has the performance of a top android flagship.”

So, there you have it folks, the Axon 40 Ultra’s 5000mAh battery life paired with the powerful 65W Snapdragon fast-charge, is every creator’s and gamer’s dream come true.

Artificial Intelligence Engineering

Artificial Intelligence plays a significant role in many of the noteworthy features the chip possesses to fuel the Axon 40 Ultra, such as the features of AI-based Echo cancellation and Noise suppression provided by the Qualcomm Aqstic™. The Qualcomm® Adreno™ GPU and the Qualcomm® Kryo™ CPU have both been engineered through artificial intelligence to power the CPU and GPU performances that are at the core of the processor. Even the camera is equipped with AI-based face detection, making it easier to focus on subjects.

Wrapping it up, behind every great smartphone, is a powerful processor, and for ZTE’s Axon 40 Ultra, that processor is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The above specs affirm that the device is more than a pretty phone, it’s a powerhouse and a worthwhile investment.
